Money is NOT Evil!

I want to talk about something that I posted on my social media today. I posted it because I was thinking about a comment someone made on another post of mine while back.

It was a comment on a video I posted on my Instagram—I can’t remember what the video was—but someone commented on the video in agreement and said something like, “Yeah I agree. Money is the root of all evil”.

*blank stare*

I mean, first of all, whatever the hell I was talking about in the video, that person seriously misunderstood. I certainly didn’t mean to convey a negative message regarding money. Since then that comment has kind of bothered me and I’ve been wanting to talk about it here.

The reason is because so many people have been ingrained to believe that the meaning behind that saying is that money, itself, is evil. I’ve heard it time and time again.

It’s a shining example of how a limiting belief can keep you stuck in a poor...

You Are What You Believe

For years I wanted to lift weights and build a muscular physique, but it wasn’t until 2008—around the age of 30—that I tried. Since I was a kid I had been athletic, but I had also been skinny all my life. In 2008 I was still super skinny, and when I say super skinny, I mean Snoop Dogg in Baby Boy with that baggy wife beater on skinny.

In fact, I look back at pictures of myself around that time and I think I looked ridiculous because I was so freaking skinny. And I always thought that was just how I was built. I thought that I was just naturally skinny and there was really nothing I could do about it—it’s just who I was.

That year, 2008, I decided I would start lifting weights. It was my shot in the dark at finally getting bigger and having the muscular physique I always wanted. And to clarify, my sole purpose for working out at the time was to beef up and build muscle, not to go to the gym for my health (as crazy as that is).

I began to research...

The Ability to Achieve Success - Born With It or Nah?

You’re probably reading this article because you’re interested in self-improvement or because you are on your own personal mission to achieve some sort of success. As I’ve stated many times in previous articles and on my podcast, Master Your Mission, mindset is—in my opinion—the most important factor to your success.

But will you ever actually be able to achieve success? What you believe about your own ability to succeed may be your answer.

Enter Carol Dweck, Professor of Psychology at Stanford University.

In her 2006 book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, she wrote that people are on a continuum based on their beliefs about where their ability to succeed comes from. Some people believe that success is innate. Those people have what she called a fixed mindset. Other people believe that success is based on hard work, learning, and their persistence. According to Dweck, those people have a growth mindset.

She concluded that, although people may...

What I Learned From a 2 Year Old

I recently spent a day with a friend and her 2 year old son, Martin. We went to a park that has an area with a water feature where water shoots out of the ground from several spouts, similar to the way water comes out of a water fountain.

Of course, this area of the park stays lit with small children running around like crazy people, ducking into and out of the many streams of water shooting up from the ground. They do this as their parents sit on the chairs and benches surrounding the area and watch them play.

So we found a spot to sit, and Martin’s mom released him into the wild. I don’t have kids, so I’m not around children on a regular basis, and I’m not really sure what I expected little Martin to do, but I was actually pleasantly surprised by what he did do.

He saw the water shoot of from the ground and went balls to the wall crazy over it. He took off running into the water with all of the other kids, jumping and stomping and laughing...

Your Mindset is as Important to Your Business as Your Business Plan

When you think about starting a business and what’s required, you usually think of things like coming up with a product, writing a business plan, obtaining financing, finding a location, marketing, sales, and customer service. Most people jump right in by planning what they’ll do and how they’ll do it. You spend countless hours researching, creating marketing material, building a website, and all that fun, exciting stuff.

In your planning, you may even consider all the reasons you’ve been told that most businesses fail—the lack of proper planning, insufficient funding, poor location, the owners not understanding their customers, or a whole litany of reasons. The one reason you never hear mentioned is that many businesses fail because so many entrepreneurs never bother to do the proper work building the right mindset.

According to SCORE, cashflow (or lack thereof) is the #1 reason businesses fail, but I don’t believe that. I believe that a...

Sometimes Your Lens is Just Dirty

When I’m out around town or travelling and I see something that I find beauty in, I—naturally—want to take a picture of it. I pull my phone out of my pocket, find a great angle and I snap away—fully expecting to have a masterpiece to post on social media or to, at some point, frame and hang on my wall.

More often than not, I get home, look at the pictures, and realize they came out horrible. I could run into Big Foot, see a UFO, take a selfie with Barack Obama, and discover dinosaur bones, all in the same day, and every single picture would be unrecognizable. For years, I was convinced that I was horrible at taking pictures.

It’s not that I’m horribly bad at actually framing the picture or anything like that—I actually do a descent job at that. The most common problem I run into is that my pictures come out blurry. Not shaky hand blurry though. See, I either keep my phone in my pocket or my hands most of the time. If my phone is in...

Lori Loughlin is a Great Example of How Limiting Beliefs Cause Us to Fail

It’s been all over the news. Lori Loughlin, who played Aunt Becky in the 90s hit sitcom Full House, is in serious legal trouble over her efforts to buy her daughters’ way into college.

Loughlin and her husband are accused of fraud and money laundering, for allegedly paying $500,000 in bribes to secure admission into USC for their two daughters. I could go on a tangent about how fucked up this is on every level, but I want to limit this conversation to what I’ve been talking about all week in my podcast—limiting beliefs.

Loughlin’s youngest daughter, Olivia Jade, was a popular vlogger with over 1.9 million subscribers to her YouTube channel and 1.4 million followers on Instagram. She had launched her own makeup products in partnership with the makeup brand, Sephora and had additional partnerships with major brands like Amazon. Olivia had expressed her disinterest in going to college on her YouTube channel when she told followers...

How to Kill Your Limiting Beliefs & Accomplish Your Entrepreneurial Goals

In the podcast episode I recorded yesterday, Dream Big Like You Did As a Child, I discussed how important it is for us to dispel limiting beliefs (beliefs that hold us back from doing the things we dream of doing) so that we can dream unrestricted—the way we did as children—and achieve our wildest entrepreneurial dreams.

I told you about a male friend of mine who wanted to be a nurse, but didn’t pursue a career in nursing, out of high school, because of what his father thought of the profession. After his father passed away, he went back to school and became a nurse, but his father had imposed a limiting belief on him that could have kept him from ever fulfilling what he knew was his purpose.

At the end of yesterday’s podcast episode, I asked you to make a list of the limiting beliefs that have held you back from owning the business you’ve always wanted. If you haven’t already done so, take a minute to do that. From here,...
