There are a lot of people who just don’t have a lot of money to invest up front, so they think that they can’t start a business until they do have a lot of money to invest. I recently sent a survey out to my email list asking them what was the biggest barrier holding them back from becoming entrepreneurs, and the answer I got the most was MONEY.
I started thinking about how I can help them with money, and unfortunately, I can’t give them the money they need to start their businesses. As I thought and thought over the last few days, I kept coming back to the fact that I’ve started all my businesses on shoestring budgets and bootstrapped them.
In fact, I started an online business with $100 and sold over $30,000 in products that I never had to touch. Pretty impressive, huh?
The fact is, I’ve never invested a ton of money into a business upfront, so the best thing I can do is show them what I know! And that brings me here.
There's a better way...
If you want to start a business, but don’t have much cash to invest up front, there are two types of business that you can easily start with very little money.
Option #1 is called dropshipping. I’ve talked about it here before, but let me explain what it is for you.
Traditional (non-dropshipping) retail stores buy inventory, list that inventory on their website, advertise to attract customers, then when a customer places an order on the retailer’s website, the retailer ships it to the customer.
With dropshipping, the retail store (you) never buys or holds inventory. The retail store works with a supplier (a manufacturer, wholesaler, or another retailer) that is willing to ship the item directly to their customer. In other words, the retailer sets up a website listing products. The retailer then advertises those products to attract customers, and when a customer places an order on the retailer’s site, the retailer places the order with the supplier, and the supplier ships the order directly to the customer.
Option #2 is Coaching. The other type of business you can start with very little upfront cash investment is to become a Coach, teaching people something you already know how to do. With this type of business, you’ll need to establish yourself as an expert and get your name out there so that people know they can come to you to learn.
Now let me add this caveat. You’ll never hear me selling something as a get rich quick strategy because those don’t exist.
All businesses require a lot of time, hard work, and commitment to see any level of success. And when you start a business with no money, you have to make up for that deficit even more with really hard work.
You have to be really committed to your business and to learning the ins and outs of ecommerce. So it’s not at all impossible to start a business when you don’t have money. You just have to learn to use what you have to get what you want.
