Your Energy Affects Your Business

Energy is extremely important to the success of your business. Of course, your physical energy is important, but in this case, I don’t mean your physical energy; I mean your metaphysical energy.

The vibes you or your employees give to potential customers is easy for them to pick up on. If they sense bad energy, it could mean game over for you making that sale.

Case in point. I once went to a well known store to make a major purchase. I was going to buy a refrigerator. I had researched the refrigerator I wanted and I was certain, when I walked into that store, that I was going to buy it that day. 

I didn’t really need to be sold, and I didn’t have any questions about what I wanted to purchase, because I had looked around and done my homework. My plan was to walk in, make the purchase, and leave. Boom. Bam. Bing.

When I walked into the store, the salesman approached me to help me with my purchase, but his approach felt very off to me. I was getting such bad energy from this guy, as he tried to wait on me, that I asked him if I could look around for a few minutes. Of course, he obliged.

He had seemed short, and almost annoyed when he approached me to help me. It was as if he was horribly unhappy that day, and maybe every day (since I didn’t know him). 

As I walked around the store, my sense of unease with making that purchase got stronger and stronger. Eventually, the salesperson approached me again to see if I needed help, and in that moment, I decided not to buy the refrigerator I had gone into the store certain I was going to buy. 

The salesman could sense my unease, and attempted to explain that he had been having a really bad day. By then, I was so certain that I didn’t want to buy the refrigerator from them, that there was really nothing he could say to win me over.

That salesperson’s energy, that day, made me really uncomfortable about making that purchase from him. And, actually, I never even went back to that particular store.

That’s not the first time — and I’m sure it won’t be the last time — that has happened. How many times have you been to a business where the owner, or someone who works for them, gives off such a bad vibe that you can’t bring yourself to spend your hard earned money with them?

It’s happened to me a lot.

And it’s not just a poor attitude, or lack of attentiveness that customers can sense. Customers can sense any form of bad energy, like the lack of confidence in your product, dishonesty, or a lack of basic respect. All the types of bad juju that could potentially lose you a sale.

As we run our businesses, it’s really important to remember that people can read your energy. When they sense something negative, whether it’s about them or not, it can affect their desire to make the purchase from your business.

When you’re going through things in life, it can be hard to hide your emotions. Sometimes, things around us are falling apart and we have to fight to keep it together on the outside.

As a business owner, it’s important that you find a way to do so. It’s okay to be human, and to have bad days, but when you do, you have to take care to avoid letting your customers see it. 

Unfortunately, customers tend to remember and talk about bad shopping experiences more than good ones, because there’s an expectation that they’ll be treated with respect and appreciation — and rightfully so. That means that one bad experience a customer has can live on long after your bad day or bad week is over.

So be aware of the energy you give off to your customers — especially when you’re going through a tough time. You may not think you’re showing your emotions, but sometimes you are. And if a customer can sense your bad energy, it could make or break your ability to sell your product or service.
