When You Get Too Comfortable, Get Scared

They say that complacency is the root of mediocrity.

There are plenty of reasons we can become complacent. It could be that we are afraid to push ourselves beyond the limits of our comfort zones, or that we have allowed life to get in the way of taking risks, or it could be that we have found ourselves in a happy place that we don’t want to disturb.

In the case of happiness, I can’t argue with that. Happiness and peace are what we all seek in life, and if you’ve found that and gotten comfortable, that’s great. Complacency in the midst of unhappiness though is another story.

Allowing yourself to get comfortable with feelings of discomfort and displeasure in life are exactly the opposite of what you should be doing if you want to live your best life. Complacency, in these situations, should frighten you.

When you find yourself getting complacent and feeling like you are not functioning at your highest frequency, it’s important that you begin to make any changes you need to make, to break out of that complacency, as soon as possible. The sooner you take action, the better.

First, identify the things in your life that you’ve gotten comfortable with but that don’t align with your dream life. Are you spending time with people that you know don’t serve you? Are you doing things that you would rather not be doing every day? Figure out all those things so you know what needs to change.

Next, make a plan of action detailing all the things you can do now to change those things you aren’t happy with. Remember, you’re not waiting around until you have all the resources you need to live your perfect, dream life. You’re creating a plan that requires you to use what you have now to start making changes.

Finally, take action. Start making those changes you’ve identified. Set goals every day and do at least a little every single day to work your way out of complacency. Once you get back to creating the habits that push you out of your comfort zone, you’ll be well on you way to creating a better life than the sub par one you’ve grown to accept.

Most people get frightened when it comes to taking action and pushing themselves out of their comfort zones, but complacency in mediocrity is what should make us scared. We all find ourselves in these situations, but what we do about it is what really matters.
