Can Your Desire to Succeed Also Make You Depressed?

Spend enough time on Instagram these days and you’ll certainly feel like you’re doing life wrong. Watching the lives of influencers, who only post perfection, can make anyone question why they get up and go to work every day if life can really be as easy as those influencers make it look.

Even though most of us know that what gets posted on social media is likely far from reality, we still like to gawk and stare at it because we dream of having that life someday—a life of perfect angles and only the highest quality natural lighting. We all have high hopes for ourselves; everyone wants to make it.

Being ambitious, or having a strong desire to achieve something and the determination to do the work to get it, is a great quality to have. I guess we’re all ambitious to some degree, but obviously some of us are more ambitious than others.

Being laser focused on achieving a goal is what I talk about a lot here, so I think it’s only right to ask this question....

Are You Reeeally Doing Your Best? Reeeally?

When you have goals in life and you’re the take action type, you decide what you want, you roll up your sleeves, then you go out and do the work to get what you want. In doing so, you may have had to get over fears, push through procrastination, and make due with the bare minimum, but when you’re determined, you ain’t letting nothing stop you.

That’s what it’s all about!

When you’re head down, in the trenches going for what you know, sometimes you can have such tunnel vision that you never look up to see whether you’re actually making progress. It’s possible and very likely that you’ll push past your initial fears, take action, and then—at various points in your process—get complacent with that level of action. You can get so comfortable that you never push yourself any further beyond that point. 

That, my friend, is called a plateau. We do what’s necessary to start, we go hard for a while, see growth...

Self Awareness is a Virtue in Life & in Entrepreneurship

 

Two of my favorite pieces of advice to give people are…

  1. Know yourself.
  2. Own your shit.

I even started my podcast, Master Your Mission, with those five words in the first few episodes. 

Knowing yourself and owning your shit are both qualities of a person who is self-aware. Google defines self awareness as conscious knowledge of one’s own character, feelings, motives, and desires.

I personally think that self awareness is one of the most overlooked keys to fulfillment and success in life and in business. The opposite, not knowing yourself, is really a liability.

Self awareness builds integrity. When you have integrity, you own your mistakes and you do what you need to do to correct any situation in which you’ve made a mistake or to avoid repeating the same mistake.
