When You Lack Confidence as an Entrepreneur, Here's What You Should Do

In yesterday’s episode of my daily podcast, Master Your Mission, I talked about how the lack of confidence can affect you as an entrepreneur. It can manifest itself in different ways and keep you stuck with the mindset that you can’t win.

Just to recap, here are some of the ways the lack of confidence can hold you back:

  1. You never take action.
  2. You second guess everything you do.
  3. You’re unable to stay committed.
  4. You take things too personal.
  5. You can’t take feedback.
  6. You miss out on great opportunities.
  7. You can’t stay focused.

You can listen to that episode in full here.

If you struggle with anything on that list, there’s a good chance you just need to work on building your confidence. And don’t feel bad, because everyone’s confidence wavers at different points in life. We all find ourselves in those moments where we have to build up our confidence at one time or another.

So let’s talk about what you can do to counter the effects...

How the Lack of Confidence Affects You as an Entrepreneur

Confidence is important in life and in entrepreneurship. Most people have moments in life where they lack confidence and others moments where they overflow with confidence.

Things happen in life that affect how we feel about ourselves. Sometimes bad things happen in our lives that break us down and leave us feeling uncertain about our own self worth or our ability to do what’s hard and unknown. Other times, great things happen that reinforce the good thoughts we have about ourselves, making us certain that we can accomplish whatever we dream.

All of these thoughts play into how we perform as entrepreneurs. When things are great in your life and your confidence is through the roof, that can show in your business. Similarly, when things aren’t so great in your life or you just lack confidence, that shows up in your business too.

It’s important to be able to identify some of the ways that the lack of confidence can manifest itself so that you know how...

TGIF (The Goal is Freedom)

I spend a lot of time thinking about what my ultimate goal in life is. What is all of this for? The early mornings and late nights I spend building my business, the energy I spend chasing whatever dream I have at the moment, the things I’ve sacrificed in the name of fulfillment—what is it ultimately for?

The one word that always comes to mind when I ask myself those questions is FREEDOM. I do what I do because what I ultimately want in life is freedom.

For me, freedom means that my mind, my body, and my soul are in alignment and at peace. It means that I am mentally and physically healthy and that I am able to treat that health as a priority without fear of ridicule or judgement—particularly my mental health.

Freedom means that I wake up every day single day, excited about what I do for a living, with a sense of fulfillment and purpose, knowing without a doubt that I am able to provide for the family that I’ll have someday. It means that I don’t have to...

The Butterfly Effect On Your Life

Have you ever heard of the butterfly effect? It’s usually referenced in relation to chaos theory, but it’s the phenomenon in which a small change in a complex system can have major effects on that system elsewhere down the line. In other words, changing a tiny element in a large process largely changes that process at a later point.

This phenomenon is based on the idea that small causes have large effects.

So if we think about the butterfly effect in terms of our lives, seemingly small decisions, meaningless encounters, and inconsequential choices aren’t small, meaningless or inconsequential at all. A decision as small as making a wrong turn can have a major impact on our lives somewhere down the line.

That is why it is so important for us to be conscious and aware of the decisions we make, no matter how small they seem to be. The thoughts we have, the words we speak, and the company we keep all matter and affect the outcomes we receive in the future.

How to Do What You're Passionate About Every Day

Do you do whatever you’re passionate about every day—for work or in your free time? If your answer is “no”, you’re not alone. Actually, you would be in the majority of people.

As far as careers go, most people aren’t very passionate about their jobs. In fact, a 2017 study by Deloite found that only 13% of people in the US workforce are passionate about what they do for a living.

If you could be doing absolutely anything you want to do every day, without regard for money, what would it be? Wouldn’t doing that make life so much more exciting?

I’m a very firm believer in finding a way to do what you’re passionate about every day. Life is too short to spend the majority of our time doing things we don’t want to do day in and day out, never taking the time to find ways to do what we love to do.

I know that everyone won’t be able to find a way to make money through their passion, and some people are okay with that....

Is What You're Willing To Risk on Your Dream Equal to Your Desired Reward?

What are you willing to risk for your dream? A little time? A little effort? Maybe 5 or 10 minutes a day? A few thoughts here and there about how you might get started sometime soon? Maybe a conversation with a friend about how you’re thinking about going for it one day?

I have a question for you that might hit kind of hard, depending on your expectations. Is what you’re willing to risk for your dreams equivalent to the reward you expect to get from them?

If you’ve never thought about that, it’s something you should seriously consider. If you are not willing to take big risks, you can’t expect big rewards.

I’m not much of a gambler in the literal sense. I occasionally buy a lotto ticket, but I’m not much fun in a Casino. I’ll sit on a penny machine, bored out of my mind for all of five minutes, because I’m not willing to risk much money hoping to win.

In those instances, I don’t expect to win so I don’t risk...

66 Days of Positive Thinking?

As you may very well know, today marked day one of my 66 Days of Bold Action Challenge. I have a great tribe of Goal Getters who are all in the Challenge pushing themselves to accomplish a major goal they have.

And today, I pushed myself way outside of my comfort zone and introduced myself to 3 new people. Here’s a picture for proof!

So one thing that I know from the first time that I did this Challenge, is that every day won’t be easy. It will most certainly get difficult to stay motivated to keep going.

Keeping the right mindset and thinking positive thoughts is crucial to getting through this Challenge. And when things aren’t going exactly as you would want them to go, that’s when you need to be positive the most.

As I always say, positivity is a choice—which means, so is negativity. You have to actively choose to think positive thoughts, which takes a ton of effort.

To help you choose positive thoughts, I thought we could revisit...

Deciding On Which Goal You Should Focus

I’m so excited! Tomorrow is the first day of my new 66 Days of Bold Action Challenge. I’ve got a great group of people who have joined and are ready to take action every day toward a goal they have, so we’ll all be working really hard toward something that’s incredibly important to each of us.

My action during the challenge is to introduce myself to a new person every day for the entire 66 days. My goal is to become better at approaching people and talking to them about my business. It’s bold, it’s scary, and I know that it will make me a better entrepreneur and a better person.

Ambitious people have a lot of goals in life and in business. You can’t fault us for that. So because some of us ambitious folks might struggle when trying to decide which goals to focus on first, I want to share how I came up with the goals and actions I considered for myself for this Challenge.

As I thought about this, I considered which of my goals would...

Even When It's Hard To, Be Grateful

Have you ever asked yourself, “Why me?”

I know I have plenty of times. Sometimes life and circumstances can have you feeling like up is down and down is down. Problems you would rather avoid can hit you out of the blue and really take your head out of the game.

I experience this, I’m sure you experience this, and I would imagine we all do—even the most successful of people. In fact, I watched the women’s Wimbledon finals this morning. Serena Williams was playing—I’m a Serena fan—but today she just wasn’t at her best.

She got beat pretty badly. I didn’t watch to see what she had to say about the match in her interview afterward, but as I watched her play, I wondered whether she has moments where she asks, “Why me?” like the rest of us.

I thought about all the millions of dollars she makes as a tennis player and business woman. I thought about the millions of adoring fans she has, all over the...

Are You Smarter Than a Baby?

Do you think you’re smarter than a baby? A newborn…you probably are. But what about a 1 year old? Maybe not so much.

At around one, babies have usually mastered the art of crawling and they begin to pull themselves up to stand on their tiny little feet. They wobble and sway because their little legs don’t have much strength and they haven’t gained full control of their motor skills.

So they grab onto things, pull themselves up, stand for a split second, then they fall on their butts. They do this over and over. Pull themselves up, stand, fall, pull themselves up, stand, and fall.

They keep doing it, unphased by the fact that they weren’t very good at standing the first 100 times. Eventually, they pull themselves up and all of a sudden, they’re standing long enough to take a step, but JUST long enough to take a step.

They fall right back on their butts, never losing focus on whatever they were attempting to walk to in the first place, so they...
