How Do You Define Success?

You are no stranger to hard work. You’ve been busting your ass, making it happen every day for your business, for your family, and for your own personal growth.

One of your biggest goals in life is to succeed. But have you ever taken the time to stop and think about what success means to you?

Do you consider yourself successful now? You’ve probably already overcome ridiculous odds and accomplished things you never imagined you would be able to accomplish.

For ambitious people, like you and me, we can sometimes feel like we’re chasing a moving target. That’s why it’s really important to sit down and come up with a definition of what success means to you.

This definition should be the core of what you value most, and your “I need to accomplish this in life and everything else is just a bonus”. So what is that for you?

Is it Family?

Maybe your success is defined by how you treat your family and what you’re able to provide for them. Most people who have children feel like they’ve succeeded when they can provide a better life for their children than the life that they had growing up.

Is it Money?

Perhaps your success is defined by financial wealth. I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone say they don’t want to become a millionaire some day. Having a certain amount of money may be important to you, and even more important, may be what that money would allow you to do in life.

Is it Time?

Having more time to do the things that are the most important to you may be the indicator of success for you. If reclaiming your time by working less would be enough for you to reach peak happiness, how would that look?

Is it Accolades?

It’s also possible that your success is defined by the accolades and acknowledgement you receive in your industry. Maybe you have dreams of making it into a certain publication or winning a particular award — like a Grammy or an Oscar.

Your success could be a combination of multiple things, or maybe your success is something that’s not even on this short list. Take some time to think about exactly what you want, and write it down. Paint a vivid picture of what life will look like once you find your success.

Overall, I think that everyone’s quest for success is really a quest for freedom. We each just define exactly what that is differently. It’s important to figure out what your freedom looks like though, because if you don’t, how will you know when you’ve found it?

It’s often said that success is a journey and not a final destination, and I get that, but it’s really easy to reach one goal and then move on to the next without ever even stopping to appreciate what you’ve already accomplished. I’m guilty of that often.

That’s why it’s so important to have a core set of goals that you feel like you absolutely need to accomplish or you’ll be regretful on your death bed. You should always be grateful for what you have today, but that appreciation for life hits different when you’ve banked all your core goals, reached your definition of success, and everything else is just a bonus.
